Earlier filtering could reduce unnecessary downstream work when a reliable exclusion decision can be made before that work starts. Move the decision only after checking that it will not reject valid records or remove information needed later.
Locate the earliest trustworthy decision
Practical editorial advice: list the facts required to classify a record as relevant. If those facts arrive only after enrichment, moving the filter ahead of enrichment changes the decision's evidence.
For an Indian branch-reporting process, an explicit synthetic branch identifier may be enough to select a report's scope. A vague free-text location may not be. Treat missing information as a separate case rather than silently equating it with irrelevance.
Compare two routing sketches
Hypothetical example: 100 synthetic records arrive, of which 30 belong in a particular internal report. Every record contains a trustworthy scope marker.
Before:
100 records → preparation → enrichment → scope decision → 30 report writes
After:
100 records → scope decision → 30 preparation steps → 30 enrichment steps → 30 report writes
The first design contains 100 preparation touches, 100 enrichment touches and 30 writes. The second contains 30, 30 and 30 respectively. That is 230 versus 90 illustrative downstream touches, a difference of 140.
This deliberately excludes the decision itself, trigger behaviour and retries. It is a workload hypothesis, not a Make credit calculation or a claim that filtering is free.
Check the hypothesis against evidence
Make distinguishes operations from credits; module activity and processed bundles inform operation counts. Its documentation also identifies trigger exceptions. Those distinctions support examining how far bundles travel, not assuming a fixed saving from a diagram.
Use this review worksheet:
- Decision inputs: present before the proposed filter, or obtained later?
- Relevant records retained: all 30 expected examples?
- Irrelevant records stopped: all 70 expected examples?
- Missing-marker records: rejected, quarantined, or reviewed?
- Audit requirement: must excluded records still leave a minimal trace?
- Observed downstream activity: consistent with the proposed reduction?
Test ambiguous and malformed synthetic markers as well as clean examples. Evaluate false rejections before celebrating reduced processing.
Stop when correctness deteriorates
Do not move the filter earlier if it requires guessing, bypasses a required check or hides failures. The next step may be improving input quality rather than rearranging the workflow.
For access needed to compare designs, check the automation catalog for access format and save terms before buying. Marketplace account, code or token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence. Provider documentation and an offer's replacement or access terms answer different questions.

Routing sketches, counts and correctness checks are hypothetical editorial guidance; no measured savings or native filter behaviour is asserted.
