Prevent overlapping automation branches with a truth table

Make each permitted input select exactly one business route. A text-based truth table exposes overlaps, gaps and unclear priority rules.

Prevent overlapping branches by writing the expected route for every relevant combination of conditions before connecting workflow steps. For exclusive routing, each valid input must select exactly one route; invalid inputs need a separate exception outcome.

Decide whether routes are exclusive

Some processes intentionally perform several actions. Others must choose just one, such as release, hold or cancel. State which model applies before reviewing conditions.

n8n documentation establishes that workflows consist of connected nodes. It does not establish your business routing priority or promise that overlapping conditions will be prevented automatically. The truth-table method here is an editorial design technique.

Avoid relying on a diagram's visual order as a business rule. Write precedence in words so another reviewer can challenge it.

Define a hypothetical order policy

Consider a fictional Indian stationery seller using three synthetic Boolean inputs: cancelled, paid and stock_available. Its proposed exclusive policy is:

  • Cancelled orders always go to “cancel review.”
  • Non-cancelled, unpaid orders go to “payment hold.”
  • Non-cancelled, paid orders without stock go to “stock hold.”
  • Non-cancelled, paid orders with stock go to “release.”

These are illustrative business choices, not universal recommendations. A different organisation may need different priorities.

Before evaluation, confirm that each input is genuinely true or false. Missing stock information must not silently become false unless that interpretation has been explicitly approved.

Write the truth table as a list

Use this worksheet with the input order cancelled / paid / stock_available:

  • True / true / true → cancel review.
  • True / true / false → cancel review.
  • True / false / true → cancel review.
  • True / false / false → cancel review.
  • False / false / true → payment hold.
  • False / false / false → payment hold.
  • False / true / false → stock hold.
  • False / true / true → release.

For each row, evaluate every proposed branch condition independently. Record the number of matching routes. One is the target; zero exposes a gap and two or more exposes an overlap.

Add a ninth synthetic case with paid missing. Its expected outcome is “input exception,” not a guessed payment state. This checks the boundary of the Boolean model.

Fix rules before connecting actions

Stop if any valid row selects multiple routes or none. Rewrite the conditions or document an explicit priority rule, then repeat the full worksheet rather than testing only the repaired row.

If you subsequently need access, check the automation catalog for access format and saved terms before buying. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence.

Sources and scope

Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. n8n workflow documentation supports the connected-node model. The routing policy, truth-table worksheet and stop criteria are editorial advice, not claims about automatic branch validation.
