When two workflow runs update the same record, the outcome depends on the destination’s write behaviour and your conflict-handling design. Do not assume that both changes will survive or that execution history provides protection against conflicting writes.
Identify the shared mutable record
n8n documents workflows as connected nodes and includes executions among its core workflow topics. That supports examining runs as part of debugging, but the supplied evidence does not establish transaction isolation, locking or conflict resolution.
As editorial advice, mark every step that reads a value and later writes a replacement. Ask whether another run, another workflow or a human operator could change that value in between.
For an Indian operations team, a useful first review target is any shared daily total, allocation counter or capacity record. Use synthetic values rather than live operational data when testing the design.
Trace a hypothetical lost update
Suppose a hypothetical training register has a reserved-seat count of 10. Run A needs to add two seats, while run B needs to add three.
An illustrative interleaving is:
- 10:00:00 — A reads 10.
- 10:00:01 — B reads 10.
- 10:00:02 — A calculates 12.
- 10:00:03 — B calculates 13.
- 10:00:04 — A writes 12.
- 10:00:05 — B writes 13.
Under a hypothetical replacement-write model, the final value is 13 rather than the intended 15. This example demonstrates a design risk; it is not a claim about how a particular n8n integration behaves.
A successful outcome for each individual write would still fail the combined business requirement.
Define a conflict-resolution worksheet
Record the following before implementation:
- Shared record key: which identifier can collide?
- Intended invariant: what must remain true after all accepted changes?
- Collision window: where can reads and writes overlap?
- Required strategy: serial processing, conditional writes, atomic updates or another verified mechanism?
- Conflict response: reject, retry after rereading, or send for review?
- Duplicate protection: how will the same intended change be recognised?
- Verification evidence: which component actually enforces the strategy?
These strategies are options to investigate, not assumed platform features. A read-before-write check alone should not be accepted as evidence that intervening changes are prevented.
Make the combined outcome the acceptance gate
Stop rollout if the team cannot explain why the two accepted additions produce 15. Next, test controlled overlapping updates with synthetic records and inspect the final value and unresolved conflicts.
If evaluating the automation catalog, check access format and save terms before buying. Marketplace account, code or token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence or concurrency guarantees.
