A variable-traffic web app or API is a candidate for Replit's documented Autoscale category. Treat that as a runtime-fit starting point, not a promise about speed, price or how your particular workload will behave.
Distinguish requests from continuous work
Replit documents Autoscale for variable-traffic web apps and APIs. It separately describes Reserved VM for continuously running services, Scheduled for tasks that run on a schedule and stop, and Static for files without a backend.
Practical editorial advice: classify what keeps the application busy. Requests from visitors, an always-active worker and a nightly report are different work shapes even when they belong to one product.
For an Indian event-registration app, an announcement may generate intermittent visits. That does not by itself determine where a separate report generator or continuous integration process belongs.
Fill in a request-pattern worksheet
Record these inputs before choosing a category:
- Trigger: visitor request, incoming API call, clock schedule or continuous loop.
- Arrival pattern: quiet periods, expected bursts and the basis for that estimate.
- Request work: operations that must finish before a response is useful.
- Background work: anything expected to continue after the response.
- State: information that must remain available across separate requests.
- Dependencies: databases or services whose behaviour affects completion.
- Acceptance evidence: response correctness, failures and recovery under a bounded rehearsal.
- Unknowns: runtime assumptions requiring current documentation or technical review.
Keep estimates separate from measurements. A planned burst is a test input, not evidence of actual demand or a platform capacity limit.
Hypothetical registration traffic
Suppose a fictional Bengaluru workshop app expects long quiet periods and a possible announcement burst. For an initial synthetic rehearsal, choose 60 registration requests over two minutes, using invented attendee records. Separately define a once-daily summary task.
Evaluate whether each valid request produces exactly one intended registration, whether rejected requests return useful outcomes and whether failures leave a recoverable state. Record elapsed times without converting one rehearsal into a general performance claim.
The request-driven registration component aligns conceptually with the documented Autoscale use case. The daily task aligns conceptually with the Scheduled description if it runs on schedule and stops. This is a classification exercise, not proof that either configuration meets every requirement.
Stop when runtime assumptions conflict
Stop an Autoscale-only decision if essential work must run continuously or if post-response work has no defined execution arrangement. Next, separate the components and verify their current runtime requirements. Do not select solely because traffic is described as “small”.
When evaluating access, check the coding catalog for access format and saved terms before buying. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence or runtime entitlement.
