What belongs in a Lovable app handoff besides the code?

Code alone does not explain an app's decisions or operating assumptions. Index the documented project contents and record what the next maintainer still needs.

A Lovable app handoff should include an index to chat context, preview, code, version history and settings, plus a clear account of unresolved decisions. Code alone is not a complete explanation of what the next maintainer is receiving.

Match the packet to project contents

Lovable documents those five content areas within a project. It also describes each project as one app, located in a workspace and assigned a single owner. Use that structure to organise the handoff rather than producing an undifferentiated folder of notes.

The packet should reference authorised project material, not duplicate private conversations or distribute credentials. This is an editorial documentation method, not a claim that Lovable generates or exports a handoff packet.

Write a five-part handoff index

For each area, add a reference, a short explanation and an unanswered question:

  • Chat context: approved requirements and reasons for major decisions, summarised without private material.
  • Preview: what the recipient should inspect and which behaviours remain provisional.
  • Code: the relevant areas for expected maintenance and known unfinished work.
  • Version history: meaningful change milestones and why they matter.
  • Settings: configuration assumptions requiring review by an authorised person.

Add the app purpose, workspace and named owner at the beginning. At the end, distinguish “documented,” “recipient checked” and “not yet verified.” A reference existing is not evidence that the recipient understands it.

Hypothetical handoff rehearsal

Imagine a Bengaluru team handing over a fictional workshop timetable app built with synthetic sessions. The outgoing developer lists five index entries. The incoming maintainer is asked to explain why registration closes early, identify the provisional preview behaviour and locate the settings questions.

Suppose the maintainer finds the code but cannot explain the registration rule. Evaluate that as a context gap, not a coding failure. Add a concise decision summary and repeat that part of the rehearsal. No real attendee records are needed.

Set a bounded acceptance target: all five entries located, three operating assumptions explained and every unresolved question assigned a person and an IST deadline.

Close gaps before access changes

Stop the handoff if essential references depend solely on someone who is leaving. Agree on an authorised continuity arrangement before changing access; the supplied evidence does not establish transfer or export procedures.

If the recipient is also comparing additional tools, use the AI tools catalog to check access format and saved terms before buying. Marketplace account, code or token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence or permission to access this app.

Sources and scope
