Choose and document the denominator before calculating engagement rate. Engagement divided by followers and engagement divided by reach are different measures. Do not compare them as if they used the same basis.
A practical checklist
- State the formula.
- Use the same time period.
- Separate paid activity from normal content response.
Keep a private decision record with the relevant link, date, chosen metric and any quoted condition. If two offers use different definitions, resolve that difference before comparing their prices. Do not fill an unknown field with an assumption just to finish a comparison.
An illustrative situation
A hypothetical post receives 100 likes and 20 comments against 2,000 followers. A follower-based calculation is 120 divided by 2,000, or 6%; it does not prove the engagement is authentic. This is a planning example, not a verified customer result or a promised outcome.
What this means for your decision
Buying counters can distort the inputs. Report the metric鈥檚 limitations instead of presenting the resulting percentage as validated influence.
