Validate numbers extracted from a document before analyzing them

Freeze the analysis until source values, labels and qualifications match. A correct sum cannot rescue incorrectly extracted numbers.

Validate extracted numbers against their source cells before calculating trends, ratios or recommendations. Check labels, units, signs and footnotes together: a number without its context is not a verified input.

Separate extraction from analysis

Perplexity documents upload-based tasks including summarising, analysing code and translating. The supplied evidence does not establish a dedicated table-extraction feature or accuracy level. Treat any numeric transcription you obtain as unverified working material.

As practical editorial advice, keep two stages distinct. First create a source-matched dataset; only then perform calculations. Do not let a persuasive explanation substitute for checking whether the underlying digits were copied correctly.

Use public or synthetic documents, not customer spreadsheets or private financial records, for this workflow.

Build a cell-audit worksheet

For every decision-critical cell, record:

  • Source page, row label and column label.
  • Original text, including commas, brackets and symbols.
  • Extracted value and any proposed normalisation.
  • Unit and scale: rupees, thousands, lakh, crore, percentage or count.
  • Sign convention: negative sign, brackets or an explicit explanatory note.
  • Footnote, reporting period and provisional status.
  • Verification result and reviewer initials.

In Indian documents, inspect whether “₹ lakh” applies to the whole column. Preserve the original text beside a converted numeric value so that a scale conversion can be traced and reversed.

Hypothetical reconciliation exercise

Imagine a synthetic quarterly statement labelled “Amounts in ₹ lakh”. It shows opening balance 12.50, receipts 3.25, payments (1.10) and closing balance 14.65. A footnote says payments are deducted and receipts are provisional.

The arithmetic check is 12.50 + 3.25 − 1.10 = 14.65. If an extracted dataset treats brackets as positive, it produces 16.85 instead. If it drops the scale, even the correct 14.65 no longer represents the same amount.

Check all four values, the unit heading and the footnote. Then evaluate separately: does the arithmetic reconcile, and does the dataset retain the provisional qualification? Passing one test does not imply passing the other.

A matching total can also conceal offsetting transcription errors, so do not skip individual cells merely because the total agrees.

Stop at unresolved numeric ambiguity

If a sign, decimal or footnote is unreadable, mark the cell unresolved and pause dependent analysis. Obtain a clearer permitted source or manually verified transcription before continuing.

If purchasing access for repeated document work, check the AI tools catalog for access format and save offer terms. Marketplace account/code/token offers do not establish official subscription equivalence.

Sources and scope

Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. Perplexity’s upload guidance establishes examples of document-based tasks, not numeric extraction accuracy. The worksheet and reconciliation exercise are editorial advice and explicitly hypothetical.
