Check a document summary against the source’s structure and decision-changing qualifications, not just its readability. A concise answer can sound accurate while omitting the exception that matters most to your reader.
Define what the summary must preserve
Perplexity’s upload guidance includes summarising among documented document-based tasks. This supports using summarisation as a task category; it does not establish completeness or accuracy for a particular file.
Before reviewing an output, state the audience and purpose. An Indian college applicant comparing a public course brochure needs eligibility conditions and deadlines. A general overview might reasonably omit decorative background. Coverage should follow the reader’s decision, not the amount of space a topic occupies.
Create a section-to-summary ledger
Use the following field structure as a plain-text alternative to a coverage table:
- Source section and locator: Heading, page or paragraph.
- Essential point: What a reader must understand.
- Qualification: Exception, uncertainty, condition or limitation.
- Summary evidence: The sentence that represents it, or “missing”.
- Consequence: Cosmetic omission, reduced context or changed decision.
- Action: Accept, revise or verify.
Complete one record per meaningful section. Read footnotes and appendices separately rather than assuming the main conclusion incorporates them. An item counts as covered only when the summary preserves its meaning, not merely its keyword.
Hypothetical coverage audit
Consider a synthetic six-section scholarship guide. Your requested summary is 180 words for prospective applicants in India.
Three illustrative ledger records are:
- Eligibility: full-time enrolment required; exception for a named fictional pilot cohort; summary says “all students”; changed decision; revise.
- Funding: up to ₹20,000 in the example; subject to a fictional review process; summary calls it “guaranteed ₹20,000”; changed meaning; revise.
- Conclusion: application encouraged after checking conditions; summary preserves that caution; accept.
Suppose the other three sections contain background, document requirements and timing. Review them too. Passing the conclusion check does not compensate for missing required documents or a deadline condition.
Evaluate the repaired summary by asking a second reader to identify who qualifies, what remains uncertain and what they must verify next.
Decide whether another summary is enough
If omissions only affect background, edit locally. If eligibility, exceptions or uncertainty are repeatedly distorted, stop relying on the summary as the decision document and consult the relevant source sections directly.
