Keep repository work interactive when requirements are uncertain, approvals are frequent, or you cannot approve the cloud repository access involved. Consider cloud delegation only after the data boundary and reviewable outcome are clear.
Separate oversight from data location
Cursor says AI features send prompts and code context to model providers. Interactive assistance should therefore not be described as inherently local-only processing.
Cursor also says Cloud Agents require repository access and temporarily store encrypted repository copies while the agent runs, deleting them after completion. Its Privacy Mode training restriction is a separate statement, not a substitute for reviewing those repository copies.
The practical question is not simply “editor or cloud?” It is “what access and supervision does this specific task need?”
Score the delegation conditions
Use this editorial scorecard, assigning zero, one, or two to each dimension:
- Requirement clarity: zero for a precise outcome, two for unresolved product decisions.
- Review frequency: zero for one final checkpoint, two for approval after most steps.
- Repository sensitivity: zero for approved synthetic material, two for unresolved non-public content.
- Change reach: zero for a bounded isolated change, two for several connected systems.
- Recovery confidence: zero for an understood recovery plan, two when reversal is unclear.
A middle condition scores one. As a deliberately conservative planning rule, totals of zero to three justify further delegation review; four to six suggest splitting the task; seven or more suggest keeping it closely supervised.
These thresholds are not Cursor settings or validated safety guarantees. Unapproved repository access is a stop condition regardless of the total.
Compare two hypothetical assignments
A Hyderabad team has a synthetic sample repository. Renaming one example variable with a stated expected diff scores zero for clarity, zero for sensitivity, and perhaps one for review frequency. The next step is to review repository access and the expected patch before delegation.
“Redesign our account permissions” scores two for clarity if decisions remain open, two for change reach, and two for frequent oversight. Even with invented data, that task needs decomposition rather than a larger autonomous brief.
Evaluate the score against the actual uncertainties, not the attractiveness of finishing unattended.
Make the next step explicit
Stop if repository copying has not been approved or the acceptance test is undefined. Next, reduce the assignment to one independently reviewable change and choose supervision accordingly.
If comparing access through the coding catalog, check the access format and save terms before buying. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence or permission to delegate repository access.
