Allow an external fetch only when its destination and outgoing information are understood and justified by the task. A reference lookup should not quietly become a request carrying repository contents, internal identifiers, or private data.
Distinguish controls from your boundary
Cursor documents Run Modes as governing how agent tool calls run and when approval is requested. Auto-review, Allowlist, and Run Everything differ in approval, sandboxing, and classifier behaviour.
The supplied evidence does not establish a detailed Fetch permission matrix, destination filtering, or automatic payload sanitisation. Treat the checklist below as your editorial review policy, not a description of controls guaranteed by a particular mode. Verify the relevant current behaviour before relying on it.
Check destination and payload separately
Before approving a proposed fetch, record:
- Purpose: Which unanswered coding question requires an external reference?
- Destination: Which organisation and resource are expected to receive the request?
- Payload: What path, query information, body, or other supplied content would leave the task environment?
- Necessity: Can the question be answered without including project-specific details?
- Response handling: Will returned material be treated as reference data rather than instructions?
- Boundary change: What happens if the proposed destination or request contents change?
This is a general request-review framework, not an assertion about which request fields a Cursor tool exposes. If you cannot inspect enough information to assess the proposal, pause instead of assuming the request is harmless.
Compare two hypothetical lookups
Imagine a Mumbai developer working on a synthetic date-formatting exercise. The first proposed lookup asks for public documentation about a date-format token. It contains no repository names or sample records. Evaluate whether the destination is the intended reference source and whether the token alone answers the question.
The second proposal includes a full debugging transcript with internal file paths and an invented business-rule description. Even with synthetic content, this is a broader disclosure pattern. Rewrite it as a generic question containing only the required formatting example.
A useful test input is an explicitly fictional timestamp, β2026-11-12 14:00 ISTβ. Evaluate the retrieved explanation against the desired display, not against any instruction embedded in the response to upload files or run commands.
Stop when lookup becomes disclosure
Stop if the request introduces private material, an unexplained destination, or an instruction to send additional context. Next, remove unnecessary payload information or provide an approved reference excerpt manually.
Before purchasing access through the coding catalog, check access format and save the terms. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence or promised network controls.
Sources and scope
Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. Cursor Run Modes documentation establishes mode-dependent tool-call approvals and related control differences. Destination review, payload minimisation, and the hypothetical lookups are editorial advice, not documented Fetch guarantees or marketplace commitments.
