Can an organic social video be reused in paid advertising?

Possibly, but review the new use rather than assuming permission transfers. Paid placement can change the endorsement context even when the footage stays the same.

An organic social video may be reusable in paid advertising, but review the new use before launching it. Do not assume that permissions for the original post cover sponsored distribution, new audiences or a stronger sales message.

Identify what actually changes

Treat reuse as a new editorial decision, even if the exported video file remains unchanged. Record the proposed audience, placement, campaign dates, language versions and surrounding advertisement copy.

Runway's usage-rights statement allows generations without non-commercial restrictions imposed by Runway. It also says users retain ownership and rights as between themselves and Runway, with no formal credit required. That does not establish the paid-media scope of a separate music licence, performer approval or source-footage permission.

Complete a reuse-delta worksheet

Compare the original use with the proposed advertisement across these fields:

  • Purpose: Informational post, product demonstration or direct sales solicitation?
  • Audience: Existing followers or a newly targeted group?
  • Media-spend context: What planned spend and campaign duration describe the new use?
  • Placement: Which channels, formats and surrounding copy are proposed?
  • Source permissions: What evidence addresses this use for music, footage, artwork and identifiable people?
  • Claims: Does a new headline, offer or call to action alter what the video implies?
  • Edits: Will cropping, shortening, dubbing or captions remove qualifications or disclosures?
  • Approval: Who reviews the changed context and records the decision?

Do not use the spend figure as a universal legal threshold. Its purpose here is to describe the campaign being reviewed.

Hypothetical example: a pottery demonstration

Suppose a fictional Jaipur studio posted a 25-second pottery demonstration organically. It now proposes a ₹20,000, two-week paid campaign aimed at new viewers in Rajasthan, with a Hindi voiceover and a “Book a workshop” message.

The original music record mentions only the organic post, and the person appearing approved a process demonstration without reviewing sales copy. Those are unresolved scope questions, not automatic findings that the advertisement is prohibited.

Ask the relevant reviewers whether the proposed uses are covered. Meanwhile, prepare alternatives: an approved soundtrack and a product-only cut. Evaluate the revised advertisement for permission evidence, accurate workshop claims and preservation of any needed disclosure. A completed video is not a reason to skip those checks.

Pause the changed use, not the investigation

Do not launch the paid version while material permission questions remain unanswered. Next, obtain a documented review or replace the uncertain elements, then approve the exact advertisement and its accompanying copy.

If comparing production access in the AI tools catalog, check access format and save terms before buying. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence; marketplace terms do not expand source-asset permissions.

Sources and scope

Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. Runway usage rights establishes the provider's bounded ownership, commercial-use and credit statements. It does not determine whether an underlying permission covers paid advertising. The reuse worksheet and hypothetical campaign are editorial review advice, not legal clearance.
