Review territorial rights before distributing an AI video internationally

A provider's commercial-use statement does not settle every asset's territorial permissions. Build an asset-by-territory review before international release.

Review permissions asset by asset and territory by territory before distributing an AI-assisted video internationally. For an Indian creator, approval for an India campaign should not be treated as evidence of permission for every overseas placement.

Separate provider rights from distribution clearance

Runway states that, as between you and Runway, you retain ownership and all your rights to content uploaded and generated on Runway. It also says generations can be used without non-commercial restrictions imposed by Runway.

Those statements describe the provider relationship. They do not establish the territorial scope of a music licence, a performer's agreement or a third-party photograph. Treat those as separate review questions, not gaps that a platform statement automatically fills.

Build a territory matrix without a spreadsheet table

Use one record per asset, with repeated fields for each intended market:

  • Asset identifier and exact shots containing it.
  • Source document, version and person responsible for clarification.
  • Intended territory: for example, India, Singapore or the UK.
  • Intended use: paid social, website, event screening or distributor reuse.
  • Duration, language versions and planned editing.
  • Status: documented, unclear or excluded.
  • Professional-review question and release decision.

Record what the document actually says rather than replacing its wording with “global rights”. Also ask whether online accessibility and actively targeted distribution are treated differently in the relevant agreement.

Hypothetical three-market review

Suppose a Pune studio plans a 20-second fictional travel advertisement for India, Singapore and the UK. Its inputs are original landscape footage, licensed background music and a consenting performer's recorded narration.

The hypothetical music document lists India only; the narration agreement lists worldwide website use but says nothing about paid advertisements. Mark the music for Singapore and the UK as unresolved, and the narration's paid-social use as unresolved in all three markets.

Evaluate each intended placement against every included asset. A documented landscape permission does not compensate for an unresolved music entry. Possible next steps are replacing the music, obtaining written clarification or narrowing the release plan. These are editorial workflow choices, not legal conclusions.

Decide when to pause distribution

Stop the affected release when an essential asset has an unresolved territory or channel. Request qualified professional review where agreements conflict, sublicensing is unclear or the intended campaign spans materially different markets.

If comparing tools after this review, check the AI tools catalog for access format and saved offer terms before buying. Marketplace account, code or token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence, and provider documentation does not establish marketplace terms.

Sources and scope

Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. Runway usage rights establishes the bounded ownership and commercial-use statements above. The territory matrix, hypothetical example and pause criteria are practical editorial advice, not legal advice or country-specific clearance.
