Keep factual claims traceable through an AI-assisted rewrite

Lock the meaning of factual claims before rewriting. A small ledger helps editors distinguish harmless style changes from edits that need fresh verification.

Keep factual claims traceable by assigning each one an identifier, approved wording and an evidence boundary before requesting a rewrite. Compare the rewritten claims against that ledger, not merely against a list of citations. This is an editorial workflow, not a guarantee supplied by an AI provider.

Lock claims before improving prose

Extract statements containing quantities, dates, comparisons, eligibility conditions or causal explanations. Give each a stable label such as C01. Record the exact evidence passage and where it came from in your editorial files.

Lock meaning rather than every word. Changing “approximately” to “about” may preserve meaning; removing either word may increase precision beyond the evidence. Likewise, a finding about one Indian city cannot silently become a finding about India.

Build a claim-lock ledger

Consider this explicitly hypothetical example involving a synthetic transport report:

  • C01 approved wording: “Among 240 respondents in Pune, 36 reported cycling to work at least weekly.”
  • Evidence: synthetic report, page 4, question 6; denominator 240, count 36.
  • Permitted edits: shorten the sentence while preserving place, sample and frequency.
  • Re-verification triggers: change “respondents” to “residents”; replace “at least weekly” with “daily”; describe the result as a citywide trend.
  • C02 approved wording: “The survey does not establish why respondents chose cycling.”
  • Evidence: synthetic methods note; no causal analysis.
  • Re-verification trigger: add an explanation about fuel costs or health.

A rewrite saying “Pune residents increasingly cycle because fuel is expensive” fails both locks. A smoother sentence is not a stronger evidence base.

Review the edit, not just the reference

For each revised paragraph, record claim ID, new wording, changed meaning and reviewer decision. Check denominators, geographic scope, time periods, uncertainty and causal language separately.

A reference can remain attached while the sentence changes beyond what it supports. Ask another editor to reconstruct the claim using only the evidence passage. If their version differs materially, reopen the wording.

Decide what can leave your workspace

Use synthetic material for workflow trials. OpenAI’s supplied documentation says personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces have sharing enabled by default. Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations are not used for training and can remain in history. That does not itself establish permission to submit unpublished material.

Stop publication when an altered claim lacks supporting evidence. Restore approved wording or obtain fresh verification. If considering paid access, check the AI tools catalog for access format and saved terms before buying; marketplace account, code or token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence.

Sources and scope

Source material checked 29 October 2026; features/policies may change. ChatGPT data controls establishes the stated training-control distinction. The supplied bounded evidence for Perplexity citations establishes source links for inspection, not factual validation; direct page text was blocked. The ledger and synthetic example are editorial advice.
