Give ChatGPT separate lists of approved facts, unknowns and prohibited assumptions before requesting a draft. Explicitly require unresolved details to remain unresolved rather than letting plausible wording fill the gaps.
Separate data settings from factual authority
OpenAI’s documentation says that on personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces, sharing for model improvement is enabled by default. Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations are not used to train models and can remain in chat history.
That establishes a stated data-control effect, not permission to submit sensitive material or a guarantee of factual writing. As editorial advice, make the information-selection decision before the drafting decision. Use public, approved or synthetic facts; exclude customer and private material.
Use a bounded writing-brief template
Prepare these fields:
- Purpose and reader: What the piece should help an Indian reader understand or do.
- Approved facts: Numbered statements with source locators in your own working notes.
- Unknowns: Details not yet established.
- Prohibited assumptions: Claims the draft must not infer.
- Permitted invention: Stylistic transitions or explicitly labelled fictional examples only.
- Output requirements: Length, tone and how to mark missing information.
Add this instruction: “Do not convert an unknown into a fact. Flag missing information separately from publication-ready copy.” This helps organise review; it is not a guarantee that every output will comply.
Hypothetical event announcement
Imagine a synthetic public workshop brief with three approved facts: the topic is spreadsheet basics, the city is Jaipur and the session lasts 90 minutes.
Unknowns are the date, venue, fee and organiser’s contact address. Prohibited assumptions include free entry, certification, placement assistance and government affiliation.
Request a 100-word announcement using only those facts, followed by a missing-details list. Evaluate the draft sentence by sentence. “A free certified workshop this Sunday” fails three checks: price, certification and timing were never approved. “A 90-minute spreadsheet basics workshop is planned in Jaipur” stays within the example’s facts.
Do not mistake a professional tone for evidence that the gaps were handled correctly.
Run the sensitivity gate and decide
Before submission, ask whether each input is necessary, approved for this use and free of private identifiers or confidential context. Replace unnecessary detail with synthetic placeholders.
Stop if a central claim lacks evidence or the input needs permission you do not have. Continue only with a reduced brief or after clarification.
