Design empty, loading and failure states for an AI-built app

Empty, loading and failed are different conditions. Give each one an explicit meaning, recovery path and acceptance check.

Specify empty, loading and failure states as distinct acceptance requirements before accepting an AI-built app. A blank panel must not ambiguously mean “no orders”, “still fetching” or “request failed”.

Start with the information the user needs

Practical editorial advice: for each state, explain what is known, what remains unknown and what the user can do next. Avoid messages that claim an order does not exist when the application merely failed to retrieve it.

For an Indian order tracker, distinguish the delivery status from the status of fetching delivery information. “In transit” describes the order; “Unable to refresh” describes the interface's current knowledge. They may need to appear together when previously retrieved data remains visible.

Do not promise a retry time or delivery date unless the application's approved requirements support it.

Create an order-tracker state inventory

Use a hypothetical tracker with these records:

  • Initial loading: no response yet; show a loading explanation; do not present an empty-order conclusion.
  • Empty success: a successful response contains zero orders; explain that no orders are available for this account.
  • Filtered empty: orders exist but none match the selected filter; offer a way to change or clear the filter.
  • Loaded success: show the returned order information and its agreed freshness context.
  • Refresh failure: earlier data exists but refresh failed; distinguish existing information from an updated result.
  • Initial failure: no usable data was retrieved; explain the failure and provide the approved recovery action.
  • Access failure: the viewer cannot retrieve the resource; avoid exposing another person's order details.

For every record, add trigger, visible message, enabled actions, focus behaviour and evidence location. Treat these as requirements, not assumed builder features.

Exercise controlled transitions

For a bounded hypothetical exercise, prepare synthetic responses containing zero orders, two orders and an error. Add a deliberately delayed response and a filter matching neither order.

Evaluate transitions, not just screenshots: loading to empty, loading to success, success to failed refresh and filtered empty back to results. Confirm that repeated attempts do not show contradictory messages or attach an old response to the wrong filter.

Choose a project-specific delay for the exercise, such as three seconds. That is a test input, not a claim about network performance in India.

Stop on misleading certainty

Stop release if a failed request is presented as an empty account or stale information is presented as freshly confirmed. Next, revise the state contract and rerun transitions.

Lovable documents preview, code and version history as project contents, not automatic state completeness. For access comparisons, check the coding catalog for access format and saved terms before buying. Marketplace account/code/token offers are not proof of official subscription equivalence.

Sources and scope
